Turkey Season in North Carolina

Turkey season is here! In North Carolina, turkey season usually lasts from mid-April until early May. Eastern Wild Turkeys are one of the most recognizable birds in the Southeast and also have superior hearing and keen eyesight. If you want to stay ahead of the best eyes in the woods, having good camouflage is important. Each movement you make must be extremely slow to avoid almost any noise at all. Turkeys that are behind trees or are looking the opposite direction, is a prime time to shoot.

Remember, it is unlawful to:

• Use dogs during spring turkey season.

• Use any type of handgun or rifle to hunt wild turkey.

When it comes to hunter safety, it’s important to learn the basics of the safety of hunting but most importantly, to actively practice these tips until they become instinct. 

Gun Safety: 

• Become familiar with your guns. Know how to properly carry it, hold it, load it, and unload it. It’s also important to get familiar with the power you’re working with when firing any of your guns. 

• Always assume every gun is loaded and ready to fire. Never point your gun in the direction towards anything you do not wish to shoot. Never aim it at a person, even if it is fully unloaded. Make sure your safety is on until you are ready to shoot. 

• The only time you should touch the trigger is when you are ready to shoot. 

Treestand Safety:

• Always install and maintain treestands with another person. 

• Check your straps, steps, and harness and replace anything that is worn out.

• It is important to always use a rope to pull up your gun or bow. It’s also important to be aware of your surroundings and never shoot towards another hunter. Make sure to wear blaze orange to stand out from other hunters.

Duck Hunting in North Carolina

Duck hunting in North Carolina can be a highly rewarding experience, especially with a group of your friends, and a few lifelike decoys to help you with your catch. Places in North Carolina such as the Pamlico & Currituck sound are a few hot spots for pintails, redheads, and canvasbacks. Wood ducks, however, can be found in different swamps, marshes, and any forested wetlands. Typically, wood ducks or “woodies” start their ventures 45 minutes before sunrise and again about 30 minutes after sunset.
