How To Care for Your Gun

When was the last time you gave your firearm a good clean? Hopefully not too long ago! If so, we are going to provide tips to cleaning your gun properly and how to store it safely.

Some supplies you will need include:

  • Cleaning rod (appropriate caliber/gauge)

  • Bore brushes (appropriate caliber/gauge)

  • Patches (cotton or flannel)

  • Gun cleaning solvent

  • Gun oil or lubricant

  • Cleaning cloths

Before cleaning your firearm, always make sure the barrel is unloaded. If you are familiar with the gun, start by disassembling the item by following the manufacturer’s instructions. To clean the barrel, brush the bore to loosen fouling and push clean patches through until they come out clean. To clean the Action, use solvent and the brushes or cloths to remove dirt and residue. Be sure to pay attention to moving parts and areas prone to buildup. Apply a light coat of gun oil to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation. Be sure to apply lubricant to any moving parts. Reassemble the firearm by following the manufacturer's instructions and give the exterior surface a final wipe-down Your firearm should be cleaned after exposure to harsh weather or heavy firing and before long-term storage.

Be sure to have a secure case and locking cabinet to keep the weapon, and others around, safe. When storing your gun, empty the barrel and remove the magazine. Improper storing can lead to rust, corrosion, and warping, affecting the firearm’s functionality and value. Environmental factors to consider include humidity control, temperature fluctuations, and surrounding dust and debris. Ideally, you want to keep conditions cool, dry, and clean.
